What should the consultant take responsibility for?
An operational assignment may need a specialist who investigates faults across connections and equipment, manages changes and follows up on recurring problems. Experience troubleshooting in a live production environment matters here. The consultant needs to explain what has been observed, what remains uncertain and what the next step will clarify.
If the network is being redesigned, a network architect needs to consider capacity, security, connectivity and future operations. A plan for new locations or a changed cloud solution must fit what already exists. The decisions need to be implementable within the resources and time available.
The migration itself requires a concrete sequence, testing and a rollback plan if something goes wrong. The architect and the implementation specialist may be the same person. Experience should resemble the work ahead
Two consultants may both have Cisco on their CVs yet have handled very different assignments. One has worked on day-to-day operation of switches and routers. The other has planned a transition to a new network architecture. Both types of experience may be relevant, but they meet different needs.
That is why we need to explain what makes a candidate relevant to you. Which parts of the assignment have they personally been responsible for? How have they handled faults, dependencies and changes? Have they worked with an internal operations team, an external supplier or both?
This clarification makes selection easier and gives the collaboration a clear starting point. You know what the consultant will address and which decisions remain yours.
The technology behind the assignment
Specific technologies help us define the requirement. A Cisco environment spanning several locations has different needs from a defined firewall assignment or a wireless network migration. Here are some of the connections that matter when describing the assignment.
Cisco, switches and routing
Switches connect devices within the local area network, or LAN. VLANs can separate traffic logically, while routing enables communication between different networks. Work in a Cisco environment may therefore include switch configuration, IP addressing and troubleshooting connections between users, servers and locations.
In more complex networks, routing protocols such as OSPF and BGP may form part of the assignment. Experience with route selection and changes to connectivity then becomes relevant. The consultant needs to understand how a change in one place affects traffic elsewhere.
Firewalls, VPN and segmentation
A firewall controls which traffic can pass according to defined rules. The assignment may involve reviewing existing firewall rules, migrating them to a new solution or investigating why an application cannot reach a particular service. This requires understanding both security requirements and the connections the application actually uses.
VPN enables protected connections over a shared network, for example between locations. Segmentation limits which parts of the network can communicate. A VLAN alone does not constitute a complete security policy. Access between segments must also be controlled, for example through firewall rules or access control lists, ACLs. Rules and traffic requirements therefore need to be clarified with the people responsible for the systems.
Wireless networks and connections between locations
Wi-Fi problems may stem from coverage, load, roaming or network access. Work on WLAN and access points therefore starts by investigating where and when the problem occurs. This is a different starting point from simply replacing equipment.
Across locations, WAN connections and potentially SD-WAN come into play. Connections need to support the applications in use, and it must be clear what happens if a connection fails. Redundancy and high availability need to be assessed as a complete solution and tested through failover.
Troubleshooting, monitoring and automation
DNS and DHCP are central to devices finding services and receiving their network settings. Troubleshooting may also require traffic measurements, logs or packet capture to trace symptoms through the network. This provides a basis for distinguishing between capacity, access, name resolution and connection problems.
When many devices need consistent configuration, network automation using tools such as Ansible can make changes more consistent and repeatable. Configurations still need version control, validation and rollback options. Automation must fit the way the operations team works.
